Comment: This ruby comes from the legendary Balas mines in today's Tajikistan. It does the legend honor: Fattest red with trainloads of fluorescence. Flawless but native hand cut. Swirly inclusions are visible only under the lens. True Balas rubies (here corundum not spinel) are a rare sight even for the seasoned ruby connoisseur. This is only the second unheated gem-quality ruby we have come across from that wildest of all regions in many years. Collector gem par excellence. Possibly the only untreated Tajik ruby in the market. GIA certified. Vincent P. and Richard H. have written a beautiful piece about their search for the elusive Balas mines: http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/tajikistan_ruby_and_spinel.htm
