Overall Grade: Very Good+ (the '+' for a rising star in the deep blue sky)
Comment: At first sight this is 'only' an exceptionally well colored unheated sapphire cabochon. The body-color is an evenly saturated, and evenly distributed, deep pure blue with practically no secondary hue (as far as that is physically possible). It is the type of blue that makes you stop on an evening walk and stare up into the sky till your neck hurts, the lushest richest blue possible but never ever black. If a 2nd hue must be named, it would be violet, which is only a variety of blue itself, but no purple, no grey. So far - so beautiful! Then, as your neck hurts, you lower your eyes and discover a light on the horizon: a star shines from the edge of the cabochon. A full star, with five rays, though the lower three are shortened, but a full star nevertheless; utterly unique (see more images). Unfortunately for us, luckily for the new owner, this is not enough to classify the gem as a star-sapphire. BTW, such a rich color is a rarity in any star which are usually less saturated and brighter toned. Instead at mere $900/ct priced as a fine colored unheated cabochon sapphire; with the rising star as a charming extra. Full 10x8mm will make a gent's ring-stone, or a pendant, which is a serious project with unheated corundum in excellent color. The under-side is rough and uneven, little polished (see extra hand-shot), as in most cabochons and all stars (not a flaw but a must). A bargain chance to own almost five carats of deep blue untreated sapphire. The surface is eye-clean, no inclusions are visible without lens.
