Comment: Some may remember this gem. There were a few discussions about this star and star spinels in general those days, nine years ago, perhaps. Many black or grey star spinels have been found and many have sharp rays but, personally, I have not seen anything comparable since (though I did try to find a true red star spinel for years). As the pictures show the rays of this star are of such intensity and focus that they almost make you blink. While the body is not of an exceptionally vivid colour, you may call it a pleasing mix of maroon and ochre, which I dare to grade 'very good' since I've never seen strong colours in star spinels (show me if you find one). The main image was shot with direct sunlight falling in from the side (that's why two legs seem short, but they are full). See under more images and on the handshot, accidentally, the multiplication of star when several light sources hit the gem. Lovely collector gem with the most stunning shows of asterism in the gem-universe, came back to us from a customer raising some cash from her collection (hence it can't be as cheap as it was 8 years ago). Translucent body with no visible inclusions (learn more here: 'judging stars on photo'). Let us set this rarity into a ring and it will reward you with ever different hues, and above all, again and again, as the days pass, it will be your own private star. New under 'more images': front/back/side images on a rainy day with no extra light but the star keeps full visibility. As always, stars are rough and unpolished from the back, here with a small chip to the left. Zero weight on the flat backside.
