2. Tricks

2.1 Use AND to specify a search

• round AND sapphire
• round AND sapphire AND yellow

2.2. Use OR to broaden a search

• square OR cushion
• neon OR electric

2.3. Use * to fill in spaces

• 1.5* (finds gems between 1.50 and 1.59 carats)
• 6.**x7.** (finds 6mm x 7mm gems)

2.4. Use NOT to limit search

• Ruby NOT Burma (finds all non Burma-rubies)
• Tourmaline NOT oval (selects all tourmalines except ovals)

2.4 Combine

• round AND yellow AND sapphire AND 1.** (finds round yellow sapphires between 1 and 2 carat)
• ​oval AND blue AND sapphire AND 1.1* (finds oval blue sapphires between 1.1 and 1.2 carat)
• sapphire AND pink AND 5.**x6.** (finds pink sapphires with dimensions 5mm x 6mm)
• 0.** AND garnet NOT sold (finds available garnet under one carat)
